I didn't know what to expect from Nicanor's first start, but I never considered that he'd grab a quarter out of the gate, turn his first race into a toss out, and remain a mystery when the race was over. Talk about anti-climactic. I feel badly for this lovely horse, and I hope both the media and the Barbaro fans forgive him. It's not Nicano's job to "finish Barbaro's story."  We don't now how Barbaro's story would have turned out -- even if he'd been able to stick around.

Even with the best of preparation things can go wrong. Nicanor, the full brother to Barbaro now 3 years old, started for the first time today and grabbed a quarter after stumbling at the start. It means more time to heal and as he did not start at two underscores it is not an age thing - injuries happen.

e Derby trail, and the Donn Handicap for top flight older horses.  I have a good feeling about Nicanor, who has come on in his training the past few weeks, but with Barbaro's own jockey, Edgar Prado, aboard for the occasion, the pressure is unbearable.  I can't even watch between my fingers.
